Possibly you’ve heard the old joke about the fellow who was told, “Cheer up. Things could be worse.” He followed the advice and was later asked how things were going. He answered, “I did as I was told. I cheered up, and sure enough, things got worse.” That in a nutshell is Paul’s message to Timothy.

Paul begins the third chapter of his second letter to his protégé Timothy with a poignant warning:

Scriptures: 1 Peter 2:9-10 and Jeremiah 1:4-10, 17-19

John McCutchen, the famous cartoonist, drew a cartoon for the one-hundredth anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The drawing shows two men standing on the edge of a snow covered forest in Kentucky on a cold February morning in 1809. A man standing in the general store asks, “What’s new around here?” The other man replies, “Nothing much. There’s a new baby over at Tom and Nancy Lincoln’s. That’s all…
