Take Me Back

Sermon delivered by Rev. Dr. Larry Maley at Dardenne Presbyterian Church on Feb. 26, 2017

“Take Me Back”

Scripture: Genesis 32: 9-12, 22-31 and Revelation 2:1-7

Gladys Dunn was new in town and decided to visit the Presbyterian Church near her home. She enjoyed the beautiful sanctuary and the joyous singing by the choir and congregation. But the preacher’s sermon went on and on. Worse, it wasn’t very interesting. Glancing around, Gladys noticed many worshippers nodding off. After the service she turned to a still-sleepy looking gentleman, extended her hand and said, “I’m Gladys Dunn.”

The man replied, “You and me both!”

Forgiveness: Inconceivable But Inescapable

by

Sermon delivered by Rev. Dr. Larry Maley at Dardenne Presbyterian Church on Feb. 5, 2017

“Forgiveness: Inconceivable But Inescapable”

Our Journey – Reconciliation

Scripture: Genesis 50:15-21 and Colossians 3:12-14

The issue of forgiveness is far more than a narrow religious or psychological topic. It is a reality with which every person must struggle – except for one person I recently read about. One Sunday the preacher’s sermon went on for 35 minutes about forgiveness. Hoping to deliver a practical impact, as the sermon concluded he asked the congregation, “How many of you have been able to forgive everyone who has offended you?” Half the congregation raised their hand.

Realizing he had more work to do, he continued preaching for another 25 minutes and asked again, “How many of you have been able to forgive everyone who has offended you?” This time everyone raised their hand, except for a 95 year old lady. Startled by her response, the preacher inquired, “Mrs. Jones, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?”
